Techniques
Metalwork

 
Description: Learn the ancient Korean technique of bonding 24k gold to fine silver, known as keum-boo, and create a pair of unique earrings. Emboss textural designs onto your earrings with a rolling mill and set tube rivets in the holes for the earring wires. Additional session offered Saturday, June 8 (B131782).
 
Students will Learn: Various metalworking techniques including how to cut (or saw) metal sheet to design your earrings, then file and adhere bits of 24k foil to the fine-silver base.
 
Prerequisites: Basic metalsmithing skills like filing a plus.
 
Project will be completed in class.
 
At least 16 years old.
 
Supplies to Bring: 6-in. ruler, awl, bench block, cutters, fine-tip marker, graph paper, leather-tipped ring clamp, metal files, paintbrush (fine), safety glasses, scissors, task lamp, work surface, tweezers, bench block pad, metal cutting scissors (instructor prefers Joyce Chen), burnisher, soft brass brush. Optional: Optivisors, small paper punches or decorative scissors.
 
Pliers: Chainnose.
 
Materials in Kit: 24k gold foil, fine-silver sheet metal, sterling earring wires, tube rivets.
 
Limit: One seat per person per class.
