Techniques
Metalwork

 
Description: Students will make two toggles, and possibly three if you are a fast worker, from flat sheet metal using a few metalsmithing tools and techniques. You will learn to cut metal with a jeweler’s saw, refine the cuts with a file, chase a design on metal, texture metal, and dome the metal to create volume.
 
Students will Learn: How to saw metal with a jeweler's saw, use a disk cutter, file and refine the metal edges, create three styles of toggle bars, chase lines into the metal, and dome the metal for volume.
 
Prerequisites: Previous sawing experience helpful.
 
Project will be completed in class.
 
At least 16 years old.
 
Supplies to Bring: Chasing hammer, flush-cut wire cutters, jeweler's saw, task lamp, 2 1/2-in. x 2 1/2-in. steel bench block, needle files. Optional: Reading glasses.
 
Pliers: Chainnose without grooves, standard roundnose.
 
Materials in Kit: Sheet metal, round wire, instructions. The instructor will provide tools for use in class.
 
Limit: One seat per person per class.
