Soldering

 
Description: Join Joe Silvera, author of Soldering Made Simple, for a class in the science and practical techniques of soldering. Students will survey several basic soldering techniques as they make three projects during class: a sterling ring, a pair of earrings, and a mixed-metal charm. Students will also solder jump rings, recycle scraps into parts for custom findings, and more.
 
Students will Learn: Soldering, sweat soldering, how to make a ring, light dapping, some polishing, texturing metal, how to recycle metal scraps into new components for jewelry, and how to make custom ear wires.
 
Prerequisites: Open to students of any level—beginners welcome!
 
Project will be completed in class.
 
At least 16 years old.
 
Supplies to Bring: Bench block, permanent marker (pointed), safety glasses. Bring an apron and dish towel size rag (both in natural fabric, like cotton). Optional: Low power magnifiers (1.25 - 2x, like head band magnifiers, reading glasses, or clip on magnifiers), and a small, portable task lamp. Instructor will bring all other tools and supplies for the project, including torches and butane, for students to use and share during class.

 
Pliers: Chainnose without grooves, flatnose standard, flush side-cutting, standard roundnose.
 
Materials in Kit: Sterling wire, jump rings, and sheet; copper sheet, full-color, step-by-step handout.
 
Limit: One seat per person per class.
