Soldering Description: Get the classic look of silver without paying the current price. How? By using readily available and inexpensive silver-bearing, lead-free solder. Heated to a molten stage, the solder can be easily stamped and takes on the look of cast silver. Additional session on Thursday, June 6th (B130107).
Students will Learn: How to etch a master stamp of heavy gauge nonferrous sheet metal and then use the stamp to create “cast silver” components; how to set cabochons into bezel cups which will be affixed to the “silver” impression and then riveted onto a metal backdrop to create gorgeous earrings and pendants.
Prerequisites: Soldering experience is helpful, but not essential, as the basics will be discussed and demonstrated.
Project will be completed in class.
At least 18 years old.
Supplies to Bring: Anvil pillow, bench block, bench pin, safety glasses, 22- or 24-gauge copper or brass sheet (approx. 4-in. x 4-in. minimum), 3 oz. or more of solid core, lead-free silver solder (available at Lowes, Home Depot, Ace, online - brand names include Oatey and Bernzomatic), small hammer for riveting, jeweler's saw and blades, metal shears. Optional: Ready-to-use etched copper or brass for the backing sheet of the pendant/earrings.
Pliers: Flush side-cutting, standard flatnose, standard roundnose.
Materials in Kit: Two 16-gauge copper sheets, brass escutcheon pins, three 5 mm cabochons and sterling silver bezel cups, copper chain. The instructor will provide ferric chloride etching solution, baking soda, butane torches, butane, and flux for students to use in class.
